A first-timer's guide to Bali: where to stay and what to see

Bali is many islands in one. Each area has its own mood, so choosing where to stay shapes your whole trip.

Pick your base

Seminyak and Canggu are great for beach clubs and cafes. Ubud is the cultural heart, with temples, rice fields, and yoga. Nusa Dua and Sanur suit families who want calm beaches and big resorts. Uluwatu is for surfers and sunset lovers.

Must-see temples

Visit Pura Ulun Danu Bratan on the lake in the misty highlands, Tanah Lot at sunset, and Uluwatu Temple for the Kecak fire dance. Bring a sarong, or rent one at the entrance.

Getting around

Traffic can be slow, so plan one area per day. Ride-hailing apps work well in the south, while a private driver for the day is affordable and the easiest way to explore the north.

Best time to go

April to October is the dry season, with sunny days and lower humidity. Book flights early for July, August, and the year-end holidays when prices peak.
