Raja Ampat: planning a trip to the world's richest reefs

Raja Ampat has more marine species than anywhere else on Earth. It takes effort to reach, but every traveler says it's worth it.

Getting there

Fly to Sorong (SOQ), usually via Jakarta, Makassar, or Manado. From Sorong, take the public ferry to Waisai, the main town of Raja Ampat.

Where to stay

Choose between eco-resorts, liveaboard boats, and family-run homestays. Homestays are simple but give you an authentic experience with local Papuan hosts.

Permits

All visitors need a marine park entry permit, which supports local conservation. It can be bought in Sorong or Waisai.

Best season

October to April offers the calmest seas and clearest water for diving and snorkeling.
